LCCLC Host Program
Canada
is made up mainly of
immigrants. Although immigration levels have fluctuated and countries of
origin have changed over the past 200 years, we have continued to welcome
people from nearly every country of the world. Today, Canada is the
world’s only officially multicultural society. London is no exception.
The 1991 Census noted 119 different ethnic origins.
London
Cross Cultural Learner Centre (LCCLC) is a non profit agency whose main
focus is “Welcoming the World to London.” One of the many services
provided is the Host Program.
For
several years I have been involved with the Host Program. The website states the “Host Program matches new immigrants
to London with volunteer community hosts.” To me the Host Program plays
a much bigger role in our community.
I have learned so much about different cultures and traditions. We
are helping newcomers, but they are teaching us.
Trish Taft, Coordinator of the Host Program describes the program as “not taking the family into your home, but into your heart.” It is a way for the community to make new Canadians feel welcome, accepted and comfortable.
What we
take for granted a new Canadian may not be aware of. For example in many
countries when you park your car on the street, you can park in either
direction. Most new Canadians are not aware of our bylaws and wonder why
they get parking tickets. Newcomers need to orient themselves to the
services available throughout the city and in their neighbourhood. The
host family can introduce them to libraries, sports facilities, shopping
facilities and other amenities, such as using the Transit System. The time
spent with a new family does not need to be elaborate - a phone call, a
visit to their home or to your home,
picnics in the park are all great ways to get to know each other.
The
Host Program, unfortunately does not receive the national visibility it
needs. LCCLC provides an excellent Orientation Program and ongoing support
for Host Families. Social gatherings are held throughout the year, thus
providing new Canadians with fun and fellowship, while providing Host Families with more insight into other cultures.
To me
this has been one of my greatest volunteer experiences. To find out more
